What’s the weather like in Brisbane in January or July? And all the other months too!
Those would have be the most asked questions I get when people are just about to arrive or are planning a trip to Brisbane in southern Queensland.
It’s quite easy to look up the latest weather forecast for Brisbane or find Brisbane area weather data.
However, it is very useful to know what the weather is really like at certain times of the year, how it can affect your holiday and how you can work around bad weather if you need to.
If you are visiting Australia for the first time, our weather is quite confusing! For a start all our seasons are opposite to the northern hemisphere and our country is so big, that it can be snowing in one part and scorching hot in another on the same day! So it is definitely an important part of planning your visit.

As I mentioned above, seasons in Australia are opposite to Europe, Asia, Middle East, North America and Canada, so if you are visiting from a northern hemisphere country it can be quite confusing – I still get confused and I have lived here for over twenty years!
Seasons in Brisbane are:

Which means that in Australia….
- Christmas (in December) is during summer so we spend it on the beach!
- June, July and August are winter months in Australia.
- In Australia we like to celebrate Christmas in July so we can enjoy the northern hemisphere Christmas traditions in the cooler weather!
- Our school year starts in late January or early February and we take our summer break starting in December.
- Winter weather in Queensland, Northern Territory and the northern part of Western Australia certainly isn’t the same as a UK, northern USA or European winter – you could be forgiven for thinking it is more like summer!
It is easy to think that weather in Brisbane will be the same from one part of the city to another. However, Brisbane is quite a large city and you will experience vastly different temperatures and weather patterns in the bayside suburbs, than the hilly lookouts or even the main city areas.
Having lived in both the Gold Coast and Brisbane and travelled to Sunshine Coast regularly, I am always amazed by the differences in the weather and temperature. Brisbane city sits in a basin which seems to trap the heat in summer and a drive from the Gold Coast just 70kms away can easily result in a 4C temperature increase!
There can be blue skies on the Gold Coast and a heavy thunderstorm in Brisbane or vice versa. The information on this page is general and is based on weather observations in the main city weather station in Brisbane. I have done this because many of our visitors stay within a radius of 5kms from the city and visit sights in the city and South Bank areas.

Spring arrives with a marked increase in temperature and humidity starts to build quickly. With the great temperatures and lower rainfall (until November) early spring in Brisbane is a great time to visit.Light clothing with extra layers for warmth early in the season or for windy days. Packing a rain jacket or umbrella is also recommended! |

Summer in any part of northern Australia and Queensland means Summer Storms are on their way! Generally summer weather is hot to very hot, high humidity which will often build during the day particularly if a storm is brewing. Storms tend to occur in late afternoon or early evening including lightening, thunder and very heavy rain. But when it is over, it is over!Brisbane sits in a basin and the city itself is quite a distance from Moreton Bay and those off the water breezes, it does get extrememly hot and stuff in the city.Down by the river can be refreshing and also up at the higher lookouts such as Mt Coot-Tha.Most good accommodation in Brisbane has airconditioning in the rooms, this is a must for the Summer months if you want to sleep as temperatures don’t drop much overnight and sometimes neither does the humidity.Summer months, high temperatures mean packing light clothing, bathing costume (swimming gear), shorts, t-shirts, rain jacket for the rain (because it definitely rains at this time of the year) or an umbrella. |

Autumn is usually pretty warm by most standards around the world. March and April are usually pretty hot during the day but by May as the days get shorter it does cool down quite a bit in preparation for winter. It is alot less humid at this time of the year and usually less rainy too.From a weather point of view, Autumn is a good time to visit Brisbane. In March and April usually only light clothing is required, but still pack a rain jacket or umbrella. By May you will probably need something a little warmer for the evenings or cooler days. |

Blue skies, crisp mornings and evenings coupled with very little rain, usually! However, we know how unpredictable weather is ;-)Winter in the Brisbane is one of my favourite times of the year and I believe a VERY good time for visitors.Because Brisbane city where most of the sightseeing is to be done holds the heat, it can be glorious to walk around at this time of the year without high humidity or too much rain.You are likely to need to pack some layers to put on at this time of year, jumper and jacket for the evenings or if it is windy. Even though rainfall is low at this time of year, I would still pack an umbrella or rain jacket for comfort. I use rain jackets as they double up as a layer of extra warmth or wind protection. |
